Automation in Ship Quality Management

A Technology White Paper on Embedded, Real‑Time Quality Assurance in Shipbuilding

Author: Anildas NT, CEO & MD, Conceptia Software Technologies Pvt Ltd, Bangalore Presented at: INA – DGS Conclave, Mumbai Date: 10 April 2026

Executive Summary

Shipbuilding competitiveness is increasingly defined by lifecycle cost, payload efficiency, and reliability rather than acquisition cost alone. Traditional quality control (QC) approaches that are largely manual, post‑facto, and labour‑intensive introduces avoidable cost, schedule risk, and inefficiency.

This white paper presents a technology‑driven approach to Ship Quality Management (SQM), centred on automation, embedded quality, and real‑time inspection. Using a Field Inspection System (FIS) and digital quality workflows, quality assurance is moved closer to the point of work, reducing total cost of quality while improving vessel performance and long‑term owner value.

1.       Introduction: Quality as a Commercial Imperative

In commercial shipping, a “quality ship” is not defined merely by compliance, but by its ability to maximise lifetime payload at the lowest total cost. This is governed by three core factors:

  • Functionality
  • Reliability
  • Cost of Ownership

Quality decisions made during design and construction have a disproportionate impact on operational expenditure (O&M) and revenue generation across a vessel’s life. Automation of quality processes therefore becomes a strategic, not operational, concern.

2.       Cost of Ownership and the Role of Quality

The cost of long‑term ownership is driven by two components:

  • Cost of Acquisition (design, engineering, construction, inspections)
  • Cost of Operations & Maintenance (O&M)

While shipyards traditionally focus on reducing acquisition cost, data shows that quality‑related inefficiencies during design and construction propagate into higher O&M costs, reduced reliability, and lost revenue opportunities. Technology intervention at early stages yields the highest return.

3.       Quality Cost in Ship Design

Quality assurance during the design phase consumes a significant share of engineering effort across disciplines:

  • Hull & Structure: 10–15%
  • Piping & Machinery: 12–18%
  • Electrical & Automation: 15–20%
  • Arrangement & Integration: 15–20%

Overall, 10–18% of total engineering manhours are spent on quality checks. Preventive quality at the design stage is time‑intensive but far more effective than detective QC later in the yard. Digitisation and automation can reduce rework while preserving design intent clarity.

4.       Quality Cost in Ship Construction

During construction, inspection activities account for 5–8% of total shipbuilding manhours, including:

  • Structural inspections – 1 – 2%
  • Piping and machinery checks – 1.5 – 2.5%
  • Electrical and outfitting inspections – 0.5 – 1.0%
  • NDT activities – 0.8 – 1.5%
  • Inspection overheads – 1.2 – 1.5%

The total cost of quality amounts to 4–4.5% of total ship cost. This cost represents a key competitive gap between Indian and other competing shipyards and is a primary target for technology‑enabled reduction.

5.       From Manual QC to Embedded, Real‑Time Quality

Traditional QC suffers from physical and temporal separation between work execution and verification. The proposed model introduces:

  • Real‑time quality – immediate validation at the point of work
  • Embedded quality – quality integrated into workflows, not layered on top
  • Autonomous quality – reduced dependence on manual intervention

This shift redefines the role of QC departments from inspectors to system owners and quality enablers.

6.       Field Inspection System (FIS): Core Technology Enabler

The Field Inspection System (FIS) is a digital platform designed to automate and consolidate ship inspection activities.

Key Capabilities

  • All ship inspections accessible in one system (Electrical / Hull / Logistics)
  • Automatic classification of inspection parameters as Go / No‑Go
  • Integration with measurement devices (plate thickness, paint film thickness)
  • Instant generation of inspection reports
  • Access to QAPs and engineering drawings on site
  • Photographic evidence captured and archived
  • Significant reduction in inspection time with higher delivered value

By digitising inspections, FIS removes ambiguity, accelerates decision‑making, and ensures traceability across the vessel lifecycle.

7.       Technology Impact on Payload and Revenue

Even marginal improvements in weight optimisation and space utilisation have substantial financial impact. An additional one tonne of payload carried over a vessel’s lifetime can generate measurable incremental revenue through increased ton‑miles.

Technology‑driven quality and lightweight design:

  • Enable steel weight reduction
  • Improve structural optimisation
  • Increase revenue per-ton‑mile
  • Lower cost per-ton‑mile

Lightweight design is not an optional choice, it is a long‑term revenue strategy.

8.       Extending Impact to Operations & Maintenance

Quality automation also influences O&M costs through:

  • Improved equipment selection
  • Better alignment with OEM maintenance philosophies
  • Enhanced reliability metrics (e.g., MTBF)

By embedding quality data from design and construction into operational phases, technology platforms such as VeriSure from C-Marine aim to reduce both acquisition and lifecycle costs.

9.       Conclusion

Automation in Ship Quality Management is no longer optional; it is essential for competitiveness. By transitioning from manual, post‑facto inspections to embedded, real‑time, technology‑driven quality systems, shipyards can:

  • Reduce total cost of quality
  • Improve delivery schedules
  • Enhance vessel reliability
  • Maximise lifetime revenue for owners

Technology for quality is ultimately technology for profitability.
